Viessmann Vitodens 050-W Boiler Review
Viessmann Vitodens 050-W boiler review
Deciding which boiler to go for can be tricky. So, when you come across a model that’s been a long-term top seller and continually features in Which? Best Buy awards, then the Viessmann 050-W boiler has to be one for your shortlist.
The Vitodens 050-W is Viessmann’s entry-level combi boiler. Yet despite its low price, it manages to pack in a huge specification that you’d usually expect to find on much more expensive models.
In this in-depth review, we’re going to look at why the Vitodens 050-W holds such a strong reputation and whether it might be the perfect heating option for your home.

What size home is the Vitodens 050-W suitable for?
Combi boilers are an excellent option for small to medium-sized homes with one bathroom.
If your home has up to 3 bedrooms and ten radiators, then the 29kW version of the 050 W will meet your heating and hot water needs.
For larger homes with 4 bedrooms and up to twenty radiators, then the larger 35kW is going to be a better option.
Another option for a combi boiler for a similar-sized home can be found in our Viessmann 100 review.
Is a combi boiler the right choice for my home?
A combi boiler is the most popular choice for heating UK homes, and they’re an excellent option for smaller homes with one bathroom.
They provide instant hot water, and with no need for tanks or hot water cylinders, it’s easy to see why they tend to be the first type of boiler to consider.
But they’re not the only type of boiler that’s available to you. If your hot water needs are very high, with hot water being needed in different rooms of the home at the same time, then a combination boiler is going to find it tough to deliver what’s needed.
That’s when a system or regular boiler may be a better option. These store hot water ready for use so it can then be delivered to several different outlets simultaneously.
Other key features
Inox-Radial stainless steel heat exchanger
To enable the Vitodens 050 w to achieve and maintain its high-efficiency level, it needs high-performance components.
The Inox-Radial stainless steel heat exchanger, a Viessmann’s patented component, makes this boiler stand head and shoulders above its competitors. That’s because, at this price point, other manufacturers rely on a lower quality aluminium heat exchanger.
Now, those other companies may argue that their aluminium heat exchangers provide excellent performance and high levels of heat transfer. And that’s correct, to a point. That’s because, over time, they begin to corrode, and because of this, they’re not an option if you have softened water.
The stainless-steel heat exchanger makes the Vitodens 050 w resistant to corrosion at a wide range of pH levels. This then means that it doesn’t need extra maintenance fluids, and it will last longer.
Viessmann is so confident about its quality that they offer a ten-year guarantee against leaks that are due to corrosion of the stainless-steel heat exchanger.
So, that’s something else that you don’t need to worry about, that’s why Viessmann are one of the best boiler brands on the market.
Stainless steel cylinder burner
Following on from the stainless-steel heat exchanger, Viessmann has gone for the same material for the cylinder burner on the 050 w. This burner can operate on very low volumes of gas, and as a result, there are lower CO2 emissions and a reduced impact on the environment.
Did you know that UK homes are smaller now than they were in the 1930s?
When data were analysed of over 10,000 homes built in the last 90 years, they found that the average UK home just keeps getting smaller, and that’s a trend that’s predicted to keep on heading in the same downward direction.
So, space in our homes is at a premium, and we need to make efficient use of every square metre.
The Vitodens 050-W does precisely that. Both models of the 050, so that’s the 29kW and 35kW models are incredibly compact.
With measurements of 707mm in height, 400mm in width, and just 350mm in depth, the 050 w is small enough to be tucked away in a kitchen cabinet or wall-mounted within a pantry.
This then comes with the added advantage of the boiler being hidden away behind a door. Not that we think for one moment that it needs hiding but having that extra layer of insulation means that the noise from the boiler operation is muffled; in fact, you’ll barely hear it, even when in the same room.
Easy to use
The Viessmann 050 provides you with choices. If you want to simply operate the system from the boiler, then you can do that via the LCD control panel and touch buttons located on the front of the unit.
But, if you’re interested in smart technologies, then you control the system through the Tado and Nest smart thermostats. Over time, the system starts to learn all about your needs and requirements.
That means that it can help you save energy and reduce bills without you needing to do anything. And if something out of routine happens, so you need to work late, then you can programme the boiler remotely through the app. No more heating an empty house!
Once you’re home, then you can also use an Alexa enabled device to control the Vitodens 050 w through voice commands.
Weather compensation works by making sure that the boiler burns precisely the right amount of fuel to match the heat that’s being lost from your home. This then means that the temperature will always be at the temperature that you need.
Traditional heating systems have a thermostat indoors, and that causes the following sequence:
- Outside temperature drops
- Heat is lost through windows and doors
- The room gets colder, which is detected by the thermostat
- The thermostat tells the boiler to switch on or work harder
- The room gets warmer again.
With your Vitodens 050 w equipped with weather compensation, you’ll just need the addition of a small temperature sensor that’s secured to a north-facing wall outside the home.
The sensor is then connected to the boiler controls. Now, information about the outside temperature is continually sent through to the boiler controller.
When the outside temperature changes, the boiler now knows about it immediately. Then it can begin to change the radiator temperature to compensate.
The great thing is that you need to do absolutely nothing for this to happen. You don’t even need to know that the temperature has changed outside because the heating is always at the perfect temperature inside.
Benefits of weather compensation for your Viessmann Vitodens 050
- Lower fuel bills. Viessmann estimate that you’ll make a 15% saving on your annual fuel bill
- A comfortable home. No periods of feeling too hot or too cold
- Proactive system. You need to do nothing at all, not even adjust the thermostat.
- Quieter boiler operation. Weather compensation means that the boiler comes on less, so you won’t hear that constant cycle of it coming on and then switching back off
- Cooler radiators – when you have weather compensation, you’ll find that the radiators feel warm but don’t get very hot and then cool. This is because weather compensation makes minor adjustments to the temperature rather than a knee jerk type reaction to heat everything up and then let it cool back down.
Made only with Viessmann components
Did you know that some boiler companies buy in components from a range of different manufacturers and then assemble the boilers under their name? This isn’t the case with Viessmann.
Each component used within the Viessmann Vitodens 050-W boiler is manufactured in the Viessmann production facility in Allendorf, Germany.
Viessmann states that their philosophy is based on the fact that “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”.
That means their heating systems, including the 050 w, are made from high quality, reliable and effective components, which are designed to work efficiently together.
Viessmann did receive some criticism for the shortage of spare parts when they first entered the UK market. However, this is no longer a problem with spares being available at several online and in-store merchants across the country.
Once you’ve got your new boiler fitted, then you want to be able to forget about it for a while. When you have an extended warranty, then you can do precisely that.
But it’s essential to understand exactly what’s covered, for how long and what you need to do to ensure that the warranty is valid if you need to make a claim.
The Viessmann warranty provides cover for both parts and labour where there has been a manufacturing/material defect, which is covered in your boiler replacement cost when purchasing your boiler.
As standard, both of the Vitodens 050-W versions come with a 3-year Viessmann warranty. The only exception to that is the Inox-Radial stainless steel heat exchanger that comes with a ten-year guarantee against leaks from corrosion.
But there are then options for this to be extended to seven, ten and twelve years.
If a Viessmann Trained Installer installs your Vitodens 050-W, then the warranty goes up from three years right up to seven years of cover.
If you’re looking for a more extended period of cover, then as long as a Viessmann Trained Installer completes the install, you’ll be given the option to pay a premium to extend the warranty to ten years.
If you purchase your Vitodens 050-W through Boiler Central, then you’ll be able to benefit from a massive 12-year warranty.
All boiler manufacturers have requirements that you must meet for your warranty to be valid.
If you don’t, then you may find yourself with no cover and the potential for a hefty repair bill further down the line.
- The installation of your new boiler replacement must be registered with Viessmann, and that must happen within thirty days. You or your engineer can do this for standard warranties, but the installer needs to complete this for you if you’re going for extended cover.
- The Benchmark commissioning sheet or Viessmann service logbook is completed once the installation is undertaken. Viessmann may ask to see this, so make sure it’s handed over before the engineer leaves.
- Your new boiler needs to be serviced on an annual basis, and that needs to be completed by either a Viessmann Trained Installer or an engineer who is gas safe registered. Again, make sure that the details of the service are recorded in the service logbook.
There are other requirements, but most refer to using the boiler in a non-domestic setting or to the installation process.
If this might relate to your boiler installation, then do check that it will not affect your warranty coverage
