Reasons For No Power To A Boiler

#1 – Fuse Blown? No Power To Your Boiler? Compare Boiler Quotes

To stop damaging electrical components in your boiler, manufacturers fit them with a fuse.

The fuse is used to prevent a shock or fire.

If there’s a speed of power, the fuse has likely blown, and this will cause your boiler to have no power.

Your boiler won’t turn on without a functioning fuse.

Change the fuse, and you should get power back to your boiler.

Where is the fuse for my boiler?

Your fuse box/ board is usually near the entrance of your property, situated high up on a wall or sometimes it could be in a cupboard under the stairs.

What fuse is needed for a boiler?

Your Gas Safe registered installer would sort this part out for you. It is usually a 3amp fuse that is fitted to prevent a shock or fire etc.

    #2 – RCD Tripped

On a fuse board, if the switch is pointing down, it means that the circuit is off, if the switch is pointing up it means the power is on.

If the board is pointing down it is likely that the circuit is tripped.

Sometimes this will be the whole property but more often than not properties have “zoned”, which means different parts of the house are on different circuits.

A power cut, bad weather or electricity over load can be common causes for the power to trip, leaving no power to the boiler.

#3 – Electric MeterNo Power To Your Boiler? Compare Boiler Quotes

Most electric meters are digital, this means most utility companies can resolve issues over the phone.

Are you on a pay as you go meter? If so simple question, Do you have credit?

If you do have credit it is likely there could be a fault with the meter.

#4 – (Printed Circuit Board) Known as PCB Failure No Power To Your Boiler? Compare Boiler Quotes

Tried everything listed above and still got no power to your timer or boiler?

The PCB could possible have broken. This can be quite a common issue causing boilers not working.

The PCB communicates with all the other parts of your boiler to keep the operation up and running. By parts, we mean pump, valves, thermostat, timer etc.

A Gas Safe boiler engineer will be able to run a simple electrical test to see if the whole boiler has no power, or if the fault is linked to the PCB.

At Compare Boiler Quotes our engineers may be able to either fix the existing PCB, or fit a new one.

The cost of a new PCB could cost up to around £500.

    #5 – Power Light Failure

Good news, not all faults relating to a boiler with no power mean a broken boiler!

Don’t forget it can be as simple as an electrical test by the Gas Safe engineer to determine the issue.

Sometimes it could be something as simple as an LED failure or even a small chance that the power light has broken on your central heating system.

#6 – Fused Spur Broken? No Power To Your Boiler? Compare Boiler Quotes

First things first, Check the fuse spur isn’t blown. A fused spur is a socket with a little red window in it.

The fuse spur is an electrical supply accessory, it separates the live and the neutral wires making the switch safer.

Most big electrical appliances will be segregated from an electrical circuit by a fused spur. For example cooker, washing machine, dishwasher etc.

If your boiler is plugged into a spur and has no power, this could be the issue solved.

No boiler will turn on without an active fuse in the spur.

#7 – Electricity supply has been turned off

One reason could be that the electricity supply has been cut off to your home. the best way to check this is by checking other appliances and plug sockets or the easiest one, check your light switches.

There can be a few reasons for this such as a power cut, someone may have accidentally turned it off if messing about fixing electrics, or if you are on a prepayment meter, you may need to top up your account.

What To Do After Fixing A Boiler With No Power

Once the boiler issue has been fixed, you will need to reset the boiler. This will ensure that the boiler checks itself and is working properly. If there are any further error codes shown on the screen as with most manufactueres such as Worcester Bosch, Viessmann, Ideal & more.

Here’s how to reset your boiler with most units:

    How to reset the boiler…

The display board located on the front of the boiler will have a reset button and instructions.

If your boiler doesn’t have a reset button visible, check your owner’s manual or google the make and model of your boiler.

Older boilers have a reset procedure which could be more technical than pressing a button.
